High School Firefighter Volunteer Program

The High School Firefighter Program is a great way to enhance your education and to learn valuable leadership skills. It is offered to students between the ages of 16 and 18 years old. Unlike some programs nationwide, once trained, our students are allowed to participate in almost all functions of fire fighting. However, High School Firefighters are always under supervision by an officer or regular firefighter and are never allowed to drive any district-owned vehicles.
- When may I begin?
- The program is offered at the beginning of each school year. However, anyone interested in learning more should contact us right away as there are ongoing ways to jump start your participation starting now! The sooner you make the commitment, the sooner you may begin the qualification process.
- What are some of the requirements?
- You must have parent or guardian approval, be at least 16 years of age, and have a valid driver's license. Upon successful completion of the application, background check, medical exam, physical agility test and memorandum of understanding, you will then be given "Recruit Status." As a recruit you must maintain passing grades in all subjects and maintain 94% or greater attendance in school.
- How much training is involved?

- As with all of our volunteer programs, there is quite a bit of training required. Upon successful completion of the training, you'll then be issued your own equipment (called bunker gear), and start going out on calls.
- Does this count as credits toward graduation and will it disrupt my normal high school schedule?
- Students may be eligible for one career technical education credit if you meet certain qualifications. Contact Angela Czarnik (pictured above) to learn more (360) 221-4300. You will attend high school as usual, in addition to training to be a firefighter in the evenings and some weekends. Once you've completed the program, you may need to respond to a fire during normal school hours. If so, you'll be required to check out and check back in with the South Whidbey High School attendance office.
- How much ongoing training is there?
- You'll participate in monthly drills and department events throughout the year. Training is offered every Tuesday night at your local station starting at 7:00 p.m. and lasts about two hours.
- What do I need to do first?
- Click to download the
Volunteer Application. Completed applications can be dropped off in person by the applicant at 5535 Cameron Rd, Freeland, WA 98249 during normal department hours so the administration may review the package and give any final instructions. In the alternative it can be mailed but this will cause a delay in processing the application. Faxed or E-mailed applications will not be accepted. If you have specific questions please call us directly at (360) 321-1533.
