Lateral Firefighter Volunteer Program

South Whidbey Fire and Rescue welcomes volunteers moving in from other parts of the state or country to join our force. There is a simple application process in order to ensure you have all the necessary training and qualifications. Please don't delay beginning the process if you are planning to relocate to South Whidbey Island. We look forward to meeting you.

What is it?
This program is offered to volunteer firefighters who are moving to the South Whidbey Island fire district from within Washington state or from out of state.

Where do I start?
Click to download the PDF File Volunteer Application. Completed applications can be dropped off in person by the applicant at 5535 Cameron Rd, Freeland, WA 98249 during normal department hours so the administration may review the package and give any final instructions. In the alternative it can be mailed but this will cause a delay in processing the application. Faxed or E-mailed applications will not be accepted. If you have specific questions please call us directly at (360) 321-1533.

The document above is an Adobe Portable Document Format (PFD) file, which you can download and print. If you do not already have an Adobe Reader, you can download one for FREE by clicking HERE.
What happens next?
We will do a background check and contact your previous department. We will request your records as well as review your application. If there is a need for any additional training, arrangements will be made for you to participate by working directly with our local office.
How long can I expect this process to take?
In most cases a lateral volunteer transfer is a very simple process. Once all the documents are in place, approval will be granted as quickly as possible so that you may come aboard and join the volunteer department within a matter of weeks.
